I was just reading a study called “Alterations in Brain and Immune Function Produced by Mindfulness Meditation”, conducted in 2003, by Richard Davidson, Jon Kabat-Zinn and others. The conclusion of this study is that “a short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function. These findings suggest that meditation may change brain and immune function in positive ways...”
I was also reading about a study done by researches at the University of Wisconsin, with scientists who were complaining about the level of stress in their work. After eight weeks of a regular mindfulness meditation practice the scientists reported noticeably less stress, and felt more creative and enthusiastic about their work. The study showed that their brains had been changed -- their was now less activity in the right prefrontal areas (which generate stress), and more activity in the left part of the brain (where more upbeat and optimistic feelings are generated.)
I’ve noticed that starting and maintaining a regular meditation practice can be quite challenging. I’ve also observed that knowing these facts – that your brain and immune system can actually be changed through meditation, can be extremely encouraging.
